Courthouse News - November 1, 2006

UNION COUNTY RECORDER, Paula White, 641-782-1725.

Snowmobile and ATV owners with regular paid registrations can now renew. We have sent out renewal notices. The deadline for renewal is December 31.

Boaters Take Note: last year the law changed concerning boat sales. Casual sales (sales between individuals) are now subject to Iowa Sales Tax and depending on the point of delivery, local option tax. Now you need a Bill of Sale from the seller, current registration (expire 4/07) and a title if the boat is 17’ or longer.

Passport fees are now $97.00 for ages 16 & older and $82.00 for ages 15 & under. Please apply early to avoid expedite fees. Processing times (6-8 weeks) are longer due to the number of passport requests and the partial operation of the New Orleans agency. For questions log onto: travel.state.gov.

The Union County Website is up and running. Please log onto unioncountyiowa.org. Forms are available to request a vital record, marriage application, passport application or boat bill of sale form.

UNION COUNTY AUDITOR, Sandy Hysell, 641-782-1701.

The Office is busy with the November 7, 2006 General Election and are accepting Requests for Absentee Ballots.

On the 10th, 17th, and 24th of October the Auditor’s Office and The Extension office teamed up and had a Poll Election Officials schooling.  There were 52 that attended the schooling.  It was a great success and I want to thank Sharon Wasteney for the great job she did in the training!  All of the 52 individuals taking the class passed and are now Certified Poll Election Officials, they will be receiving pins and certificates.  This schooling was made possible by the Help America Vote Act (HAVA).

We will be open on Saturday, November 4, 2006 from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for Absentee Voting in the Office.  We will also be open until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, November 6, 2006 for Absentee Voting in the Office.

UNION COUNTY ASSESSOR, Gene Haner, 641-782-1735.

All Union County residents who have purchased a home and moved should stop in and sign a New Homestead and Military Exemption, if eligible.

The qualification for any honorably discharged member of the United Armed Forces has been changed to be eligible for the military exemption on your property taxes. Now if you have served eighteen months or more in the armed forces irregardless of when you served, you are now eligible for a Military Exemption or if you have served for twenty years in the Reserves or the National Guard you are also eligible for the military credit. What is required to sign for this credit is either a DD-214 from the regular service or a complete listing of years served from the Guard or Reserve.

You are also required to inform this office if you have removed or built any new buildings or dwellings or if you have remodeled any buildings or dwellings.

Family Farm Credit is now a one-time sign up and can be signed at any time for qualifying owners.
