Courthouse News & Announcements

Courthouse News - April 3, 2007

UNION COUNTY RECORDER, Paula White, 641-782-1725.

Turkey tags are now on sale. Landowners will need to be registered through the State DNR system to purchase their tag. This is the same registration used for deer tags.

We have mailed out renewal notices for boats registered in Union County with a 2007 expiration. All boats in Iowa will expire April 30, 2007. Due to a legislative change, boats will now renew for 3 years instead of the 2 year rotation. REMINDER: last year the law changed concerning boat sales. Casual sales (sales between individuals) are now subject to Iowa Sales Tax and depending on the point of delivery, local option tax. Now you need a Bill of Sale from the seller, current registration (expire 4/07) and a title if the boat is 17’ or longer.

Passport fees are now $97.00 for ages 16 & older and $82.00 for ages 15 & under. Please apply early to avoid expedite fees. Processing times (up to 10 weeks) are longer due to the number of passport requests. For questions log onto: travel.state.gov.

Birth certificate requests through the mail now require a notarized signature and a copy of your photo ID. The fee is $15.00.

The Union County Website is up and running. Please log onto unioncountyiowa.org. Forms are available to request a vital record, marriage application, passport application or boat bill of sale form.

UNION COUNTY AUDITOR - Sandy Hysell, 641-782-1701.

The Union County Offices will close at 12:00 noon on April 6, 2007 to observe Good Friday.  Just as a reminder, don't forget to purchase your 2007 Dog Tag for a $1.00.  Our office is starting a new procedure by scanning all official documents into the computer, this will help us tremendously in our shortage of storage space.  Plus documents will be easier to find when looking up past years information.

UNION COUNTY TREASURER - Linda Marley, 641-782-1710,
Drivers License (hours 8:30-4:00)

Second half property taxes were due by March 31st.   Our office will be sending delinquent notices to property owners by May 1st.  This delinquent notice will notify the property owner of the amount of delinquent tax due by May 31st and also give notification that the property will be offered for tax sale on June 18th if the taxes are not paid.

Senior Citizen and Disabled Property tax credit forms need to be filed with our office prior to June 1st to be eligible for the credit on September 2007 taxes.  To be eligible your annual income for 2006 must be below $18,876.

UNION COUNTY ASSESSOR - Gene Haner, 641-782-1735.

All Union County residents who have purchased a home and moved should stop in and sign a New Homestead and Military Exemption, if eligible.

The qualification for any honorably discharged member of the United Armed Forces has been changed to be eligible for the military exemption on your property taxes. Now if you have served eighteen months or more in the armed forces irregardless of when you served, you are now eligible for a Military Exemption or if you have served for twenty years in the Reserves or the National Guard you are also eligible for the military credit. What is required to sign for this credit is either a DD-214 from the regular service or a complete listing of years served from the Guard or Reserve.

You are also required to inform this office if you have removed or built any new buildings or dwellings or if you have remodeled any buildings or dwellings.

Family Farm Credit is now a one-time sign up and can be signed at any time for qualifying owners.

This is a privately owned informational website that is not owned or operated by any state government agency.
