UNION COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS-Mike King, Chairperson, Ron Riley, Vice-chair, Bob Brown, Don Irelan, Tom McCann782-1720

The Union County Secondary Roads Department employs 24 full time employees and 3 seasonal employees.  The department is responsible for the maintenance and repair of nearly 700 miles of roads and 178 bridges in Union County.  There are a total of 68 miles of paved roads, 28 miles of seal coat or black top roads, 500 miles of rock roads, and 107 miles of dirt roads.

The average annual budget for the secondary roads department is around $2.4 million.  The roads budget gets around $530,000 from property taxes from within the county, around $190,000 from the county wide one cent sales tax, and approximately $1,700,000 from state gas tax and user fees.

Union County also receives around $550,000 per year that is deposited into a Farm to Market account.  This account is maintained by the Iowa DOT and is used only for construction on Farm to Market routes within the county.  The county also receives about $140,000 in Federal Aid for new bridge construction, and $260,000 for roadway construction on Federal designated roadways.

Union County Roads Department hauls around 75,000 tons of rock per year at a cost of nearly $600,000.  Part of this cost comes from property taxes and some from the local option sales tax.  The remainder of the local option sales tax is used for bridge replacement project in the county.  Currently the Road Department has the capability to replace bridges as long as 65 feet, and are working towards replacing larger bridges with department personnel.  A 65 foot long bridge costs around $70,000 to build, and the county is averaging 2 bridge replacements each year.  All the roadway pipe replacements are also accomplished with department personnel and equipment.  The annual payroll for the department including fringe benefits and insurance is approximately $1,007,000.
